Beautiful film adaptation that always hits the right chord. Small moments of humor (Orlando who has to walk sideways with her 18th-century crinoline to get through the furniture), big moments with the perfectly cast Tilda Swinton, and a great combination of set design, costuming, camera work and music make this a great experience. feast for the eyes and ears.

Super beautiful images, super beautiful design and a brilliant role from Swinton. And the soundtrack is also perfect for me.

And of course, Swinton is about the only one who could have played this role - although, no matter how masculine she may appear, she will always remain a woman in my eyes. This means that the whole concept of substitutions only works moderately, although that may be a very personal thing. This will undoubtedly be better in a book, where you will have less trouble with these kinds of limitations.

The fact that it is originally from Woolf is perhaps also the origin of a whole series of very beautiful quotes in the film. Also very clever.

The film is a somewhat unusual, Fellini-esque costume drama that is visually impressive. The idea is also good: we travel through time with the main character, who changes gender halfway through but - it is emphasized - remains the same person so that we see how different life is as a man or as a woman. The starting point and end point form a beautiful circle: in the early days (17th century) young men wanted to look feminine (and the capital was inherited through the female line because it would certainly remain within the family) and in the end times (20th century) they wanted young women look masculine (and can finally be independent) so that the androgynity, embodied by the protagonist, remains a common thread through history while society reacts very differently to the accidental label 'man' or 'woman'. The progression in time or chapters is also strongly structured thematically (with a nice apparent reversal): death  love  poetry  politics  society  sex  birth.

I once tried to read a book by Virgina Woolff, but I couldn't get through it: what the main characters say and think in their stream-of-consciousness doesn't interest me. The interpretation of the above plot through what is said or what happens also did not grab me anywhere: the often poetic statements have no depth and the plot only very briefly shows something of women's history and does not leave you on the edge of your seat. to sit.
