Several films have been made about Queen Mary of Scotland (16th century), but probably not as contemporary as this 'Mary Queen of Scots'. After a brief marriage to King Francis II, Mary (Saoirse Ronan) is a young widow who leaves France, the country in which she grew up, to return to Scotland and claim the throne there. But the Catholic Mary has bigger ambitions: to also ascend the throne in England, because she would be more entitled to it than the reigning Protestant Queen Elizabeth (Margot Robbie).

Central to Mary Queen of Scots is the relationship between Mary and Elizabeth, the two queens who, besides being each other's 'competitor', are also in the same boat: on paper they may rule, in reality it is only men who are in the background. pulling strings. And it is also those men who plot, gossip and wage war again and again. Both Mary and Elizabeth are portrayed here as women with strong personalities who stand above the scheming of the men. And so this Mary Queen of Scots unmistakably has a somewhat feminist slant. It is also striking that the cast is very diverse: black and Asian people also appear in the entourage of the queens, something that differs from how the situation really was at that time. And so this film seems to be more about the now than about then.

Both Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie play their roles properly. But not in such a way that it leaves an indelible impression. The same is true for the film as a whole. The costumes and make-up are nicely done, but compared to, for example, the recently released 'The Favourite', significantly less (at the end of the film Queen Elizabeth looks like Pennywise in It through the grimace, whether that is the intention used to be?). Again credits for the score, which supports certain scenes nicely.

Not a movie for historians. There is too much effort being made to be 21st century #metoo politically correct, while that cannot be applied to the 16th century. In Elizabeth, whom we happened to see last night last night, that was somewhat the case, as were other historical inaccuracies, but less ostentatious.

In addition, the music was sometimes downright bad and cheesy and unintentionally created a comical effect.

The acting of the leading actresses saved things a bit, as did the shots of the landscape. Final score: 2.5 stars.

Didn't really like the movie, especially after watching the trailer. What I saw was a two hour long costume drama that seems to run for four hours. This is mainly due to the timeline in the plot. They've taken a few highlights from Mary and Elizabeth's lives and tried to stitch them together with some controversial subplots. Usually the result is no more than a few actors looking sad and trying to bleat something serious in a dark damp room with a heavy medieval accent. There are a few moments that stand out because of Saoirse Ronan, but they are not enough to save the whole project.

In short: mediocre plot, long-winded and historically a mess.
