Bitter Moon plot

"A kinky voyage with a full head of steam."

Nigel and Fiona, a respectable English couple, take a cruise to Istanbul to relaunch their marriage. On the ship they meet the disabled American writer Oscar and his stunning, sensual French wife Mimi. Oscar tells Nigel the story of their blistering passion that has brought him to the brink of collapse and even disabled him. Their relationship is mainly erotic, gradually pushing their boundaries of mental and physical pleasure into a game based on SM fantasies. Love and hate alternated more and more often, with both exploring the limits of cruelty towards each other. Nigel is shocked, but at the same time intrigued by Oscar and Mimi's story. Before they know it, Nigel and Fiona become pawns in the strange couple's tantalizing game.

The pun in the title works better in French: lune de fiel instead of lune de miel (moon of bile instead of moon of honey). In English that becomes bitter moon instead of honeymoon. If I'm right, the full moon comes into view twice: halfway through, when Oscar (Peter Coyote) breaks, and at the end.

Oscar and Mimi (Emmanuelle Seigner) once had beautiful dreams for the future. When these failed to materialize, they indulged in a decadent lifestyle out of bitterness. Within their love-hate relationship, they take turns humiliating each other. Despite his nihilistic views, Oscar regrets how he treated Mimi.

Out of boredom, they decide to involve Nigel and Fiona Dobson (Hugh Grant and Kristin Scott Thomas) in their sadistic games. The contrast is great: the Dobsons are a neat couple from the British upper class. The following days, however, their masks are torn off. Under that layer of civilization can hide lower needs. Romantic and idealistic illusions are shattered.

The narrative structure with the flashbacks works well. The dialogues are excellently written. The four actors give shape to four very different characters with depth.

Very fascinating film about changing hunters and prey seasoned with an erotic sauce. A film about passion that passes and ends in domination, humiliation, frustration and unsatisfactory fantasies.

Apart from the intriguing plot, Coyote and Seigner are also very strong. Both deliver a brilliant performance in the complex relationship that binds them. For better or for worse, as a hunter and as a prey, as a perpetrator and as a victim...

Excellent dialogues, fascinating plot and also the narrative structure through flashbacks came into its own. Visually not always top, but that hardly bothered me. Good film with different psychological layers. Beautiful!
