Le Retour de Martin Guerre plot
1542. In Artigat, a village in Ariège, 13-year-old Martin and 12-year-old Bertrande get married. Both come from wealthy families and it quickly becomes clear that they did not want this marriage themselves. Martin is a quiet, taciturn boy. There is a lot of gossip in the village about the absence of an heir. After a conflict with his father, Martin disappears with the northern sun. Years later he returns, having grown into a big, cheerful fellow. Martin appears to have changed a lot in appearance and mentally. But Bertrande still loves him, so he's part of the family again. But then doubts arise. Martin's uncle wonders if this is the real Martin Guerre.
