What a wonderful, sparkling, original film. Okay, about two-thirds it starts to twitch, but that's short-lived and I'll gladly forgive it. It's not often that I am so surprised by a movie.

This movie is best-viewed in a sneak preview, I think. Without you knowing it in advance, so see if you can manage that

Black Swan by the Coen Brothers. In any case, it seems so. I have never been so fascinated by figure skating. I didn't know the history of Tonya Harding. So for me it was a pleasant surprise.

The movie settles into the 70s to the 90s with appropriately great music. But it's mainly the characters that make it so good. That mother, husband Jeff, boyfriend Shawn and of course Tonya herself. Colorful figures that can hardly be real, yet do not go over the top and if you see some images of the real figures at the end, you get confirmation of these caricatural figures.

The big trump card is Margot Robbie, who plays the part of her life and deservedly received an Oscar nomination. And the story, which is not only too good to be true (facts actually happened, but the filmmaker leaves the true facts to the viewer), it is also exciting. So if you don't know the real history, you'll be on the edge of your seat.

A surprisingly good film and right at the top of this year's list.

Nice.

Especially because Gillespie's previous films were not that much. Gillespie started his career quite promising, after that it all became less. This is not yet a real return to form, but it is quite worthwhile, with a few things that stand out positively.

On the one hand, even the routines, which are filmed with great panache. Very nice camera work on the ice rink, which reinforces the core of the film. Also the role of Janney, who is quite hilarious. The rest of the cast is certainly not bad by the way, they do their part to keep the balance between humor and drama neat.

The only downside is that the film might be a bit too long. The "incident" may be the moment that determines the entire plot, but I could have liked it a little more compact. Not much else to say about this movie. Nice form, good acting, never really boring. It's not very exceptional either, but it's definitely worth it once in a while.

3.5*
