Stupid of me. I should have just read the back of the DVD and then I would have known this was a musical and would have left it in the store and nothing had happened. I don't like musicals. I hate Joop van den Ende's productions and watch with horror every time how a classic loses all dignity when it is crammed into a random theater singing happily. Evita may be different, but to really sing ALL the dialogues turned out to be a bigger nightmare than the ten scariest horror films put together. Even the crowd in the square chants chanting the dictator's name. Ideally I'd like to rate this with a minimal score, but remember that musical is the only genre I really can't watch. I therefore feel that it is inappropriate to cast a vote. Nor when rom-com fans vote for (in my eyes) cool B-action movies.

Have a look at this musical and it is indeed a musical Think maybe one sentence is spoken and the rest is all sung, this is probably the übermusical, so if you don't like seeing musicals, definitely avoid this one

Of course everyone knows the song "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" and it gave me goosebumps in the movie, so they succeeded. For the rest, there were still a few songs that were worth listening to. The film starts off very bombastic, but luckily the music style does change.

Antonio Banderas also took care of the vocals and he certainly did a good job.

The story still managed to captivate me quite a bit, although they remain fairly blunt about everything, it is not even mentioned how she actually died (apparently from cervical cancer).

Not a must-see, but not super bad either. Good if you're in the mood for a musical and have some time, because it lasts a little over 2 hours.

You should definitely watch this movie for the music and not so much for the story. Usually I don't like to watch movies with a weak story and superficial characters which I think this movie is guilty of. However, Evita has something special. Apart from a few lines, there is only singing and hardly any speech. I think it's incredibly clever that the story of Eva/Evita Duarte/Peron is presented in a succinct way on the basis of songs. On the lead roles Evita, Colonel Peron and Che (or voice of the people) there is little character development. For people who do not know the story of Evita or who know little or nothing of the historical background of Argentina, certain events will not know what is going on. I liked all the lead roles. Madonna may be a pop queen, but she sings the song from "Don't cry for me Argentina" with heart and soul. I couldn't imagine anyone else singing that. I also thought Banderas was brilliant in his role, better than what he usually brings.

The first time I saw this in the bios. Although not a fan of Madonna or Banderas, I bought the CD not long after. I've listened to this more than I watched the movie
