Not bad, but well told and the film doesn't know whether it's drama or comedy. It's just not the same as both and with that a somewhat saltless whole that is sometimes entertaining and sometimes boring. The funny thing was that I saw a trailer of this film a few times and immediately knew: I don't need to see it, not the kind of film (subject nor elaboration) that I like. Anyway, I had missed the title during those trailers and this turned out to be that film with a very nice title and with 3 nominations that would still be in the cinema in the week of the Oscars, so I went anyway because I now once during this period.

Visually okay. Sometimes a beautiful golden shine on the paving stones, but also otherwise very dull imagery. It's not ugly, but it doesn't have any peculiarities or creaks or tastes in it either. As the whole movie hangs around mediocrity. Never really fun, never really exciting, never really compassionate. Acting isn't necessarily bad either, but it is from a calibrated vessel. The side kick that has a somewhat striking role (a kind of Bil Nighy, but much less) and the leading role for a foul-mouthed lady. That is done quite convincingly, but it is also thick on top and it remains a role that you can screw up but also quickly do well. Fortunately that was the second one, but I think a nomination for that is a bit exaggerated. 2.5*.

Pleasant movie. Melissa McCarthy takes on the role of the late Leonore Carol ('Lee') Israel, the author best known for her celebrity biographies. Can You Ever Forgive Me is based on Lee Israel's memoirs. The film is about the period after those biographies, when Lee finds himself financially ruined after work flopped and comes up with the idea of forging, embellishing and especially inventing letters from several deceased celebrities, in order to increase their value. and to cope with its financial slump. She comes into contact with Jack Hock (Richard E. Grant), a theatrical man with a showy penchant for men, who has also fallen into disrepair. He becomes her drinking buddy and eventually her partner in crime.

Melissa McCarthy is great as the crass but essentially insecure and lonely Lee Israel. who is estranged from the grown-up world. She does not have the character and perhaps not the skills to be found amiable by her environment and thus increase her own chances of success. This results in some hilarious scenes, but sometimes also especially painful ones. Tellingly, the scene in which Lee confesses in court that forging and embellishing the letters has made her extremely happy and that she has never been so happy before. It increased her self-esteem, something it had always been lacking.

In addition to a fairly truthful portrait of Lee Israel, Can You Ever Forgive Me is also a visually pleasing film to watch: the images of New York in the early 1990s are beautifully edited. The jazzy score tops it off.

Beautifully acted movie by McCarthy and Grant! They have a strong chemistry together. I had never heard of this story about Lee Israel before. The course was therefore unknown to me and I was somewhat surprised by the twists in the story. So I didn't read any further. The friendship between the 2 protagonists made an impression! The lightness of the script doesn't make it too heavy either. Little gem this!
