The quality newspapers give this film a full five stars, but I found it disappointing. In essence, it is again the same film as all his previous films: here again the family connection is examined as such. Is it best to choose your own family or does only blood ties give a real caring relationship? Maybe Koreeda's magic has worn off for me a bit or maybe I wasn't in the right mood, but the movie just didn't really touch me. The idea of stealing children who have also been stolen themselves is intriguing, but in the execution the film mainly found a kind of Oliver Twist transformed into modern (Japanese) society, but without the exciting adventures and iconic characters such as the novel by Charles Dickens offers.

Nice.

But most Koreeda movies are. Unfortunately, these Shoplifters never became much more than that, but I kind of saw that coming. When a movie like this gets too much media attention, it's usually because it's just a bit too good and easy.

I prefer Koreeda who takes more time, who takes it easy and who knows how to make nicer scenes with less drama. In Shoplifters it's all just a bit too much. Watching poor people again, outcasts from society who live outside the norm but still manage to lead a happy life, despite all the problems.

With Franky and especially Ando you have two actors who can handle this kind of road as the best. Their scenes are by far the most interesting. The settlement is just a bit too plot-driven, so that the last half hour also collapses a bit, but the quality of this film is otherwise unmistakable. Some beautiful scenes, but not enough for a masterpiece. And with Koreeda that is easy to measure, because the man has enough to his name.

3.5*

Beautifully cool, subtly developed drama about a poor but happy family that shoplifts to make ends meet. Beautifully observed and beautifully played by the entire cast. The film flows pleasantly and initially does not seem to have much going for it, but at unexpected moments certain emotional moments come in quite hard. Well done.
