Introducing the life of Janet Frame, introverted, awkward, shy and shy of people and yet valuable as a writer, into a film and including the often fascinating events in her life in the right proportion is not an easy matter.

Jan Campion succeeds quite well in this and yet on the one hand one can be accused of the fact that the film lasts too long and on the other hand I occasionally had the feeling that important matters, also in terms of time, were passed over a bit quickly while others, according to my feeling less important, which was magnified. Perhaps the intention was to fill the film mainly with the smaller incidents that best highlighted Janet's unusual character and to highlight the dramatic periods simply and as briefly as possible.

In any case, a sober film with excellent performances by the actresses who portray Janet in her different phases of life.

Good film about a rather shy girl who grows up and eventually becomes a writer. In terms of structure, it is a fairly standard biopic about Janet Frame who has not exactly had an easy life. Beautifully depicted and the main character is portrayed well (especially thanks to the three different actresses who all do a good job). Partly due to the length, it sometimes sinks a bit (especially during the last part, which is not interesting everywhere).

Beautiful film. Saw it for the first time, a long time ago, when you could still borrow VHS from the local library and was immediately enchanted - although it is far from cheerful.

Great acting by all 3 actresses. Here* they are with the real Janet Frame in the frame.

* Source - seems to be a Dutch postcard...
