Well.

Anime, it will never fully be my thing. But as a film fan you just have to step outside your comfort zone every now and then and so also with this genre. I can't say that there are often masterpieces for me, but Tokyo Godfathers was still manageable.

But I wasn't a fan of the characters. Annoyingly voiced and put down. Three silly characters who actually fill up the 92 minutes. It is not very nice to watch and the humor is not my thing either. Hyper animated and a lot of screaming for comedy, but I can't say it made the corners of my mouth curl even a little bit.

The story isn't particularly special either. I read a lot of comparisons to director Kon's other movies but since I haven't seen those it's hard for me to compare it to that. In principle, it comes down to a slightly deeper version of a street adventure, but often not presented too nicely.

Animation is also nice, you can't ignore that. Nicely brought to life here and there, although I found the designs of the characters a bit less successful. Specifically the main characters, because I found the secondary characters a bit more successful. The most beautiful images come from animated Tokyo and they grabbed the most attention I had.

Fortunately, it doesn't take too long, because I'm not a fan of this genre and this film doesn't change that much. I thought the finale was a bit of a let down. Set up a bit too sentimental while the rest of the film is much cornier. I find that mix (hypercomedy and heavy sentiment) often doesn't work, and it didn't work here either. I can't give it more than a 2.0* for the smashing animation. Maybe one day I'll come across another animated masterpiece, but this one certainly isn't.

Not my taste. Characters didn't interest me, while the story is mainly about that. But the animation didn't really appeal to me either. Sometimes beautiful with fine details, but as a whole I found the style just so-so and too brown. And the voice acting is also a bit annoying. Luckily short. 1.5*.
