Monsters University is a successful prequel to Monsters Inc. There are three characters central to the film that we already saw in Inc. Of course the one-eyed Mike who has to fight against prejudice and try extra hard to pass the scare school. His roommate Randall is growing up to be his rival in Inc, but it's nice to see how it all started. We conclude with Sullivan and we see how great the contrasts are between the two. That results in nice animation with some humor and rivalry. It's fun to discover how Mike and Sullivan have become such good friends.

And the script remains just great with the scare school and the bedroom doors. The Scare games are a nice find from the makers to make it a nice prequel. The film contains a moral and clear message. All the characters are (literally) colorful and quirky. You don't have enough eyes to see all those strange creatures. Just super fun! Nice sequel to Inc!

The universe of Monsters Inc. follows the standard Pixar concept: we take a certain (fantasy) creature and we create a society around it that is quite similar to ours. The fact that Monsters Inc. was still a fun movie was largely due to the very cute girl. She is missing in this film, leaving a clichéd film with the main message that you can achieve things in a team that you cannot do alone. And, of course, this moral lesson has to be learned the hard way. I have the feeling that I have seen this film so many times, only the monsters setting is different, but actually not that much different, because it is modeled after our society.

I've seen some other Pixars recently, and they look a lot better visually too, with some spectacular action scenes in particular. These are largely omitted here, while the design, especially the colors, is also disappointing.

In short, a clichéd film that is also ugly and unspectacular. I can't get much out of this, so I end up with 0.5*.

Prequel to the hit Monsters Inc. returns to the time when Mike [Billy Crystal] and Sullivan [John Goodman] met and explains how and why they became colleagues and best friends. Mike is the maverick determined to prove himself at Monsters University, despite everyone — including the dreaded Dean Hardscrabble [Helen Mirren] — already thinks he has no chance. Sullivan must continue a family tradition that requires him to be the best of them all. The story is a bit simplistic, but the attractive characters and a number of inventive ideas make this excellent viewing material for young and old.
