Oof.

A fairly experimental animated film, although you'd be forgiven if, after fifteen minutes, you slightly question the term "animation". It hasn't been much more than static drawings that a camera zooms over.

Unfortunately, it remains fairly cheap-looking throughout the film. Okay, it is sometimes quite psychedelic, in combination with the equally freaky music it has become an archetypal flower power product, but many signs of qualities cannot be recognized in it.

After a while it reminded me of a completely failed Tenshi no Tamago. Yamamoto apparently intended a similar effect, but simply lacks the technical finesse and class of the Oshii/Amano combination.

There has been quite a lot of fuss about this film, which doesn't surprise me, but I didn't think it worked at all. Just too broken and cheap.

Well...a difficult one! Belladonna of Sadness has many static drawings over which a camera passes and is accompanied by voices without us seeing any lips moving. This is combined with moving animation that is displayed in a more sober and simple manner. Admittedly, there are also a lot of beautiful drawings in the film that are enhanced by a specific color or by a faster pace of display. But ultimately that is not the death knell of the film, but rather a saltless story that fails to fascinate.

4/10
