Ever since he was little, Takashi Natsume could see what others couldn't, namely monstrous ghosts called Yokai. Natsume's late grandmother, Reiko, challenged Yokai to matches and those who lost had to sign a contract with her, assigning their names to her "Yujin-cho". Since Natsume inherited the book, he, along with Nyanko Sensei, his self-proclaimed bodyguard, has spent his days trying to return the names in the book to their owners. Natsume has been busy, balancing between humans and Yokai, when he happens to run into an old classmate, Yuki. It brings back painful memories...
