"He knows no fear. He knows no danger. He knows nothing."

After all the agents of the British Secret Service are killed in one blow, Pegasus (the Head of the British Secret Service) has no choice but to put secret agent Johnny English (Rowan Atkinson) on the case of the stolen Crown Jewels. The trail leads to French businessman, Pascal Sauvage (John Malkovich). Of course the boss of English doesn't want to hear about this, because Mr. Sauvage enjoys an extremely good reputation and is loved in the higher circles.

“English, we can't afford any mistakes. Not tonight.”

Nice comedy. This is mainly due to Atkinson's play, and the man has the laughter on his hand as a parody of 007. The humor isn't even that strong, but the way Atkinson performs it, and especially the way he reacts to certain situations, ensures that a scene is quickly successful. As a 'bond girl', Imbruglia is mainly a reporter, and she does that excellently. I found Malkovich disappointing, and I don't think he really knows what to do with the role of eccentric bad guy. Fortunately, there is plenty to laugh about, and that actually makes Johnny English's mission a success.

Nah, not too good.

Bond is apparently an easy to parody series, this film also makes an attempt. But without too much success, because there is not much originality to be discovered. And what remains with a film like this is some easy and, above all, lazy humour.

Atkinson doesn't have a whole lot to deal with. A wimpy detective, who apparently shouldn't be too much of a character. Where Nielsen was allowed to cross the line in The Naked Gun, Atkinson's character remains too well-behaved within the lines. That doesn't make a movie like this any funnier.

Malkovich is a terrible miscast, with his bad French accent. His wig is pretty much the only comedic thing about his entire character. And Imbruglia also only walks a bit as if she actually doesn't know what she was doing on this set.

The humor is just too old, in terms of direction it is stiff and it is mainly functional and Atkinson, what it is all about after all, simply lacks material and context here to make something fun out of it. I'm actually surprised that sequels have been made of this.

Johnny English is a delightful parody of the James Bond series with an excellent protagonist who knows how to get the job done.
