The fear of losing someone lurks throughout this adventurous drama with a high Disney factor, aimed at teenagers. Gunner Boone discovers that his mother is terminally ill, and after hearing the legend of the Water Man who can cheat death, he sets out to find this mysterious man in the surrounding woods together with the blue-haired girl Jo.
Nicely shot, but the ending was no surprise and ultimately falls a bit short. I had expected something stronger. The ending is also not very clear about the mother's fate. Is she still sick?? . Not a bad debut from Oyelowo.

The child acts well. The parents too, but the story is weak.
Not really impressed. It is not a bad film in its genre, but it didn't do much for me.

Intelligent, imaginative teenager Gunner [Lonnie Chavis] discovers the legend of 'The Water Man', who is said to be able to bring people and animals to life with a magic stone, through an expert on local folklore [Alfred Molina]. His mother [Rosario Dawson] is terminally ill, so Gunner enlists the help of a rebellious girl [Amiah Miller] who promises to take him to 'The Water Man'. His father [David Oyelowo] enlists the help of the sheriff [Maria Bello] to find Gunner, and time is running out due to a forest fire. Oyelowo convincingly incorporates the magical realist elements into this captivating coming-of-age drama and brings out the best in his youthful cast.
