It's totally totally up to me, of course, but this is a movie that in every way is so inventive, so colorful, so imaginative and so lively that I can't imagine people not getting excited about this. A small selection of memorable moments: The tear that sheds tears that unleash a series of events that eventually lead to the stranding of a ship, the brain in spirit with migraine, the flea with a hypodermic needle on its snout, Cyclops number 1 strangling Cyclops number 2 and then plugs his own camera into the other's brain so that he looks at his own dying face (according to Jeunet a tribute to Michael Powell's Peeping Tom, and the conjoined twins one mouth inhales and the other exhales the smoke) – one unforgettable scene after another passes by. Brilliant sets, beautiful music and great playing of perfect heads (Daniel Emilfork as Krank!) in a nightmarish yet moving story. Yes, I know, everyone has their own taste, so many people so many opinions, there is no arguing about taste and everything is subjective, but La cité des enfants perdus is such an absorbing film that Despite all the reports from disappointed viewers (Dominique Pinon annoying as hell?!) I find it almost incomprehensible that this film is not firmly in the MovieMeter top-100.

Stays cool.

Perhaps the purest Jeunet/Caro, in which the dark world with laconic, strange characters comes to life best. Makes it feel a bit loose as a film at times, they are also more about exploring the world itself than following the plot.

Visually still very handsome. Beautifully lit, great detailed and cool decors. Acting strongly determines the atmosphere (and makes it a bit lighter), but will not be to everyone's taste. Emilfork certainly steals the show as far as I'm concerned, what a great head this guy has.

Separate, somewhat darker soundtrack for a Jeunet, but also enjoy the crazy characters, the great decors and the great ideas of Jeunet and Caro. Hasn't lost too much of its feathers after 20 years. Unfortunately, it remains a somewhat forgotten Jeunet.

4.5* and a extended review

I couldn't really do anything with this. Jeunet isn't my favorite director anyway, but I've never even seen such a weak film by him. So now it is. It seems like a bunch of ugly scum. All quite absurdly presented and again such an ugly filter as usual at Jeunet. There are undoubtedly fans here, but despite the fact that fantasy is a very popular genre for me - I don't share Jeunet's fantasies unfortunately. Poorly told and just a weird movie with very weird characters. Typical case of love or hate film.
