Nice review.

Too bad I haven't seen any other Zatoichi movies in those 16 years, because there are enough. But with series like this I try to watch them in order, which means I have to start in an era that doesn't suit me. Bond has a similar problem.

Anyway, it doesn't matter, because although Kitano nestles neatly within the franchise, this is also a film that clearly comes from a director with vision. The comic parts, but especially the musical parts, are scenes that (I don't think) you will find in the original series.

Furthermore, there is Kitano himself, of course, who nicely finds the balance between the character and his own typical acting style. Kitano's Zatoichi remains a film with a very individual identity, which does not deviate too much from the more typical genre work. A very nice exercise in balance that 16 years later still radiates a lot of film joy.

4.0* and a extended review

Fine film by Kitano about a blind swordsman somewhere in the nineteenth century. Nice that Kitano manages to include humor in the film in addition to the (bloody) fights (without much visual fuss). I couldn't help but smile several times.

Blind fury, the film with Rutger Hauer, but in a Japanese feudal jacket. Great action scenes with blood spurting debauchedly. Only it was very unfortunate that the big showdown between the two masters only had a lousy fight. Just a few seconds and it was already over...

A film that also stands out in atmosphere, setting and accompanying music. Characters who don't always add as much, but that is then compensated with other striking meaningless events such as the crazy hopping boy next door who dreams of becoming a samurai. Also Shinkichi who pretends to be a good-for-nothing better than he actually is was quite funny during his sword fighting initiation lessons.

First Kitano.

I don't really know him as a director, but as an actor. Perhaps I haven't been able to catch him in his most iconic roles yet, but that expression can't get off his face. You immediately recognize the charm he exudes, and he seems to know it himself, because he uses it eagerly.

Zatoichi is apparently based on an old legend, but that didn't really interest me much before I started the film. What particularly appealed to me were the promises for a visually attractive and, above all, entertaining action drama film, but I couldn't find them. Especially in terms of action an extremely disappointing film, with a bored cameraman and silly bloodshed.

Most of the visual power is used from the environment that certainly manages to deliver some decent and unique images, otherwise it is a film that focuses a lot on the characters. Characters who can never really set up a unique personality outside of Kitano alone. Everyone who is not relevant is especially busy, everyone who is is calmer in nature. That strikes me much more than who the characters actually are and what makes them unique.

I found the film to be very long and boring. A location that could be used in many ways is nicely used, but everything that takes place within that world is a lot less interesting. The slowness as well as the complete lack of energy make for a tiring course that only revives once the film really puts the emphasis on presentation.
