The School for Good and Evil plot
Every four years, on the evening of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, two 12-year-old children are kidnapped from the village of Gavaldon and taken to the School of Good and Evil. Sophie, blond and beautiful, dreams of going there and living happily ever after as a princess with a loving prince. Her best friend, Agatha, on the other hand, is the opposite: ugly with dark hair and living in a graveyard. Both are perfect candidates for the school, but on the fateful night of the kidnapping, they are sent to the 'wrong' school to their horror. Sophie must become evil and Agatha a heroine.

Bad.
Very lousy fantasy drama for teenage girls. 2.5 hours long, but never fluent. The plot has to tick off a number of elements, so it swings from hot to here. Established names such as Laurence Fishburne and Charlize Theron are associated with the film, but are only sidenotes. The film has to be carried by very bad actors. Our protagonists are not to be seen, but who knows, this kind of film may appeal to certain teenagers.

This is most like the TV series The Worst Witch, based on the stories of Jill Murphy. It all looks quite amateurish, although there is now and then a reasonably nice effect. The four houses we know from Harry Potter are reduced here to just two divisions: the evil and the good. The contrasts between the two are nicely done: sour-looking goths on the bad side, sweet princesses in pastel colors on the other. While the good has something fake and hypocritical, the bad appears more real and authentic. But it doesn't get more profound than that.
A very busy movie.
Sophie is a mix of Rachel Mc Adams from Mean Girls and Daenerys Targaryen, in appearance that is.
The voice-over comes from Cate Blanchett who just shamelessly does the same trick here as she did in The Lord of the Rings. I expected her to say at any moment: ...but they were all deceived.
A few hip records in between and voilà we have another movie.
At the end you get a woke lesson shoved down your throat when they are called 'witch' by a few villagers.

Chaotic, moralistic fairy tale about the battle between good and evil, which repeatedly misses the mark. The good Sophia Anne Caruso doesn't make much of it and is literally and figuratively played off the map by the charming Sofie Wylie (a discovery). The "big names" in the cast don't have much to do. Colorful in many ways, but that's about it.
