Gare adventures sci-fi that just rolled off the assembly line. The basis of the journey still has the necessary mystique, but soon a silly story unfolds that apparently has to pass for spectacular in view of the omnipresent pompous music. With a dose of fun it could all still work, but it doesn't get any further than a silly professor and some silly jokes. Russel, surly and with a double agenda (oh, exciting!), is even making himself completely ridiculous.

A term that also quickly comes to mind when the opponents loom up with their crazy voices. The fact that the boss of the stuff has the look of an arrogant girl doesn't really help either. Of course there is a lady who certainly loosens up in the last cringe-inducing half hour. Not the saddest element, neither does the insignificant action, it is reserved for a slave who is shot over. Emmerich must and will move his audience. Here's a bad movie.

This movie is a guilty pleasure for me, with a nice mix of Egyptian mythology and science fiction. I think the story is very original with those pyramids and that portal to other worlds. The aliens with their helmets also look pretty scary. James Spader is a bit dubious as a scientist, but Kurt Russell fits his role as a hardened soldier, with a haircut on which you can put an entire tea set without any danger of it falling off his head.

Seen at the time shortly after release, not very impressed. Now revised because of the ever interesting James Spader, but the film hasn't gotten any better unfortunately. Such a promising premise, and when the men go through the stargate they arrive at a planet "in another galaxy far far away" where we see exactly 1 desert, 1 city, 1 ore quarry, 1 palace and 1 spaceship — why the hell would Ra want to spend his eternity there? The natives clearly don't feel like it either, because from that moment on the film slides into a kind of romantic revolution with screaming Arabs, where we fortunately still get nice shots of cool silhouettes on desert dunes. Roger Ebert: "[ i]Stargate[/i] is like a film school exercise. Assignment: conceive of the weirdest plot you can think of, and reduce it as quickly as possible to action movie cliches. If possible, include sun god Ra, and make sure something gets blown up real good." Student passed project with flying colors, also thrown out of film academy.
