Planet of the Apes plot

"Somewhere in the Universe, there must be something better than man!"

American astronauts are sent on a mission to a distant planet. And although their journey will take only a few months, they gain so much space that they are several centuries ahead of Earth. After crash-landing on an unknown planet, three crew members find themselves in a cold, bleak landscape and encounter a civilization in which monkeys have evolved into the most intelligent species. When the astronauts are captured by the monkeys and treated like beasts, they fully understand what is happening to them.

After having seen War of the Planet of the Apes (2017), I also reviewed this original Planet of the Apes (1968) and I still think it is a good film despite its age. Admittedly, the acting is a bit stiff, the battles between Taylor and the apes look very fake and the ape planet doesn't look like some unknown planet somewhere far away in the galaxy, while the astronauts are there never even think that they are back on earth.

But the idea for the time was very original (albeit based on a 1963 book La Planète des Singes by the Frenchman Pierre Boulle) and the make-up of the monkeys was very well made. There was, of course, no CGI at the time, and one might wonder which looks the most fake: CGI or actors in masks and makeup?

Charlton Heston impresses again in his role as George Taylor. The man simply exudes masculinity, having previously starred in Ben-Hur (1959) and The Ten Commandments (1956). Linda Harrison as the beautiful Nova doesn't have much to do as she can't talk, but she knows how to express her emotions well with her big eyes.

If you can go into this film without any previous knowledge, you will of course be more shocked at the surprising denouement, but is there still a person who does not know which planet Taylor is on? And that's a bit of a shame, because I can still remember how I was completely blown away when I saw the last images of Planet of the Apes as a child.

It was time to re-watch one of my all-time favorite movies after all these years.

Seen the entire franchise a few times in the past, but now it was a while ago. Now it was time to watch it with my son and to philosophize. Because there is enough content in it to ramble on about it. But the most important thing ... the film is still rock solid. Just awesome.

The story that is patiently built up with a few exciting scenes, Taylor's hilarious quotes, the beautiful scenery of Lake Powell, the interesting dialogues, the fantastic designs of the monkey village, the beautiful sets, the great make-up and of course the colossal end ensure that this film remains a monument.

Charlton Heston is well cast for this role and the beautiful Linda Harrison can certainly be there. As a teenager I remember hoping she wouldn't die in the movie. Oh yeah, it's an old movie, but my son gives it a big 8/10. That also says something that the film, despite its age and with all that bombastic violence of today, also has a lot. I will of course stick to my 5 stars which I don't give very often.

This film was finally taken out of the blu ray box a while ago (the one in the shape of a monkey's head).

First seen in the 1980s. The film starts very strong and the journey on the mysterious planet exudes mystery and adventure, although as a viewer you understand that they will eventually end up with the monkeys.

Then the film comes to a standstill with a somewhat too ordinary and self-conscious interlude, only to step up a gear in the finale and add the necessary tension and action.

All pretty nice, but a real classic?

Just when you want to label the film as nothing more than reasonably amusing, then comes the astonishing ending completely unexpectedly, which really hit me like a sledgehammer on the first viewing. wow! What a great, original lock! The ending of the book is completely different and ultimately used for the Burton remake, but is a lot less. That of the original still makes a huge impression.

Incidentally, it took a long time before I saw the real faces of actors McDowall and Hunter, for years I only knew them with their monkey faces from this film series.

Because of the strong start and the fantastic ending: an eight, or four stars.
