"Earth's Only Hope"

The year 2145. John Canyon is one of the last freebooters of the universe. The Space Trucker knows the Milky Way like the back of his hand and won't be put off by anyone. On Triton, one of Neptune's moons, he gets a secret cargo aboard. Slowly it becomes clear that it is a deadly load. The final destination is on Earth. There, death and destruction must end the reign of the incumbent president. However, due to the haste, they get lost, ending up in the so-called Scum Cluster.

Well, that wasn't much either. After the introduction to Hopper in Speed, I remember that this movie came out and at first I liked it because Hopper was in it. Never seen it at the time, and actually completely forgotten about it until it came on TV last week. This is my chance, I thought, and I wondered why the film got so little on TV, but now I know.

It actually represents very little, tends to a cult classic in terms of style, wrong humor and mediocre special effects. The presence of Charles Dance makes it somewhat bearable but all in all it is far too little for a positive review. Seen and soon forgotten as far as I'm concerned.

A film in which I never wanted to because of the B-credits of director, cast and general appearance, but I saw it so often at kingloop stores and on television that I finally watched it anyway, just so that I wouldn't be bothered afterwards. would have more of, "just to get it out of the way". And hey, it's actually not that bad: Dennis Hopper just keeps it serious, Debi Mazar has nice green underwear, Charles Dance is a great villain, the film makes no secret of its Pigs in space! -ish CGI, and the robot soldiers are a nice combination of RoboCop and the Alien xenomorph. That said... well.

Crazy stuff.

I'll just assume that the intention was to make a parody of the 70's pulp sf movies, but that failed miserably - it's all just a bit too little fun for that. And not that it has a serious appearance, but still just too much to be a bit disturbing. A slightly clearer choice would have resulted in a much better film.

Charles Dance is a bit lost, but does portray the nicest villain by far - I even have to think if I've actually seen a nicer one in the space genre. Don't hit me right now. Too bad he gets so little playing time. Dan Hopper, who is cast a bit more obvious and Mazar also fits well, but what Dorff does in the game is less clear to me. Get in the way, something like that.

The effects are appallingly bad. That's no doubt meant to be some sort of cult sauce, but it's too ugly and too bad to serve that purpose. Just like the design - not a little bit, but really not at all. Unfortunately.
