Revisited on the renewed Blu-ray box set from 88Films, where the original Mandarin dub, in particular, received a huge upgrade. There's also a selection of classic English dubs, which I have a soft spot for, having grown up with them on VHS.

Directed by Chen Chi-hwa, who also directed Shaolin Wooden Men and Half a Loaf of Kung Fu. Filmed in South Korea, the story begins with the mysterious disappearance of eight Shoalin masters who wrote the legendary book of the snake-crane technique. Jackie Chan's character, Hsu Yin-fung, carries this book. It later becomes clear that he is doing so at the behest of one of the missing masters, to lure the person responsible out of hiding. Hsu's only clue is a distinctive scar on his shoulder.

My favorite film from the Lo Wei era, featuring some of Chan's best traditional choreography ever captured on film. The opening alone, with its magma-red backdrop, features Chan's magnificent display of weapons, including the spear (Chan's weapon of choice), combined with acrobatics set to the Monty Python score. Other highlights include the stunningly choreographed fight against the three assassins with straw hats and spears, whom he was previously observed by in the film, returning to the inn that evening (great scene). The complexity and technical skill of the fight scene are simply sensational. Note the way Chan uses his body to dodge the oncoming spears and his ability to twist and bend his body in incredible ways! And of course, the finale against Kam Kong, who also made a big impression as the villain in Shaolin Wooden Men.

It's a shame this one is so unknown here on the site. It's one of my favorite Jackie Chan films.
