Historical drama about Joan of Arc, which raises the question of whether she really had visions or only thought she had divine visions. My opinion is quite divided. Thought it was neither good nor bad. Jovovic has never been a great actress, and as Joan of Arc, she can't seem anywhere to display that power of faith that started masses of soldiers. You won't get anywhere with screaming and being hysterical. I was not convinced. And Dustin Hoffman pointing out her sins ... I'm not sure what to make of that display, it's a bit annoying. No, I didn't really like it despite the excellent directing.

The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc is Luc Besson's ambitious retelling of the story of Joan of Arc. A young farm girl has visions and thinks God is speaking to her. Years later, she tells the Dauphin that God has commanded her to lead him to victory and reclaim France from the English.

Besson makes no bones about it, Jeanne shows in his film all the signs of religious delusions and mania. She is always extremely happy or extremely sad, thinks she can help everyone and give redemption and that she can talk to god. However, Besson makes it ambiguous by including the visions in the film and adding the character of 'conscience' in the form of Dustin Hoffman.

Audiovisually, the film is a feast for the eyes. Good locations, costumes, battles and the visions were also well portrayed. Eric Serra makes a good soundtrack, which became very special especially with the visions.

The acting is also pretty good. We see a lot of nice British actors again. John Malkovich felt a bit like a miscast, though his quirky demeanor was somehow fitting for an eccentric aristocrat. Milla Jovovich plays the role of Jeanne very cleverly, but quite hysterically.

Real downsides of The Messenger were mainly the humor and the holes in the story. At times it almost looked like Monty Python or early work by Jos Stelling. All those jokes created a kind of light-heartedness next to the heavy topics, but also fell out of tune. There are also things in the story that could have been better explained. For example, the ending felt rushed.

All in all, a great adaptation of a difficult story. Besson has managed to make something nice out of it.

Good film in which a French girl receives a vision and gives the French army a victory over the English. A beautiful, historical story about Joan of Arc. The movie certainly looks good, with some spectacular and grandiose battles. In terms of tone, the whole is sometimes a bit unbalanced. Milla Jovovich is well cast in the title role.
