In my memory it was a modest masterpiece, but now after revision it is slightly less so. Still a nice Cold War thriller with a suitable atmosphere, but the episode is a bit bare. Not in terms of images. They are still beautiful, especially around the submarine. The Arctic plain is a bit disappointing, but it is not very disturbing.

It could have been a bit more pointed. The film is rock solid, but this sometimes creates a monotony and it lacks a certain flair. Too bad, because Sturgess has a competent cast at his disposal. The advantage is that the film never loses the common thread, so it is never boring. The little bit extra is missing, but still doable.

Another good film adaptation of a MacLean story after the great Where Eagles Dare and The Guns of Navarone.

John Sturges knows how to bring this story to screen very well. Still have a few films of the best man.

The film is given in two parts. The journey to the station and the part at the station itself. Although the station itself sounds more interesting, the journey is also depicted very well. The submarine looks good and the way of working on the submarine is also well explained. The film takes its time with everything and that can be seen in the running time, but this makes the film very strong.

The film may be considered long-winded by some and I can live with that to some extent.

The acting is also okay. Patrick McGoohan does a very nice job, as do Hudson and Brown. And Borgnine is......Borgnine.

Although this is an action/thriller, I think it is more of an adventure film. John Sturges knows how to bring a nice adventure to the screen and once again proves to be a strong director. I still have to see quite a few things from him and I will definitely do that in the near future.

3.5*

A somewhat disappointing film by Sturges, who I normally think is a great director. I'm a big fan of those type of mission adventure films. Such as Where Eagles Dare and The Guns of Navarone. But Ice Station Zebra does not reach the level of those films. I especially found the submarine journey quite tedious. The film is quite enjoyable to watch, but it didn't really leave an impression. The acting is good and the film also looks very solid. But still, this is a disappointment from Sturges. 2*
