Fun crime comedy that is anything but in the Christmas spirit. I had a great time with the funny story about Santa Claus, who is in financial trouble due to his waning popularity and at the same time is besieged by a ruthless, vengeful assassin.

It's been (too) long since Mel Gibson has come out so well.

Mel Gibson is perfectly cast as Santa who gets a hitman (Walton Goggins) sent after him. The silly plot is worked out surprisingly convincingly, aided by a hypothermic comic script and sympathetic characters. In the end it doesn't have much to do and the build-up is on the long-winded side, but I could do something with it. Anyone who expects a film with a cozy Christmas atmosphere will be disappointed - this is quite violent and bloody.

Mel Gibson may never have been a great actor, but seeing his name on a poster had some predictive value about the movie. This seems to be the case in the last few years, but then mainly in a negative sense - such as, for example, Eric Roberts, who only gives a film the death knell by attaching his name to it. Once an Oscar nomination, and then silent.

Thankfully, Gibson hasn't quite gotten to that level yet. Because - let me say that first - this is not exactly a top film, but it is not very bad either, and Gibson plays a great role in it. Well cast, that's for sure, but also well played.

And the movie itself, the idea is good - not exactly original, but that's not any movie with Santa in it, I'm afraid. And there are quite a number of nice details in the design and implementation. What is a pity is that there is a little too little sharpness, a little too little venom. Not really daring to choose, not daring to persevere. And that's a pity - because with this concept it was never a standard family Christmas movie anyway, and if you've passed that station, then really go over the top, I think.

Anyway, there must also be average viewing food, if only to make the distinction with the really good films clear.
