Revised for the first time in 15 years – would the fond memories be justified? Apart from all the 9/11 echoes (including the well-known story of the delayed release), this is a special film: first a standard revenge film with the surprise that Arnold's family is not kidnapped (as in Commando[/i ]) but really very irrevocably dead, then some kind of [i]Apocalypse now-like trip into the jungle (and when I see Arnold in the jungle I automatically expect a Predator from behind a tree somewhere any moment diving, especially when Dutch, I mean Gordy suddenly slides down a mountain and ends up in a lake), and then we end with a classic nick-of-time climax with predictable explosion, brawl and (unfortunately) the villains who in an boo! twist turn out to be inexplicably still alive). Not all equally strong, but thanks to the raw edge of Colombian cocaine smuggling, the (at least for me) unexpected twist of the Wolf's henchman and above all Arnold's surprisingly sober and very strong playing the film is well above average. The hypothermic way in which Arnold is in shock after the death of his wife and son was truly a revelation, I've never seen him play so well. (Also great roles from Elias Koteas as a shadowy CIA agent and John Turturro as scene-stealing hustler, by the way.)

Collateral Damage was a very sleep-inducing movie experience for me. Arnold can certainly guarantee a lot of fun, but this platform was boring and his acting clearly didn't come into its own in a positive way. This monstrosity is soon forgotten.
