Warner Bros. Discover chief executive David Zaslav is keen for the studio to make more Harry Potter movies due to how profitable the franchise has been over the last 20 years.

Based on the books by J.K. Rowling, Warner Bros. has produced The Philosopher's Stone, The Chamber of Secrets, The Prisoner of Azkaban, The Goblet of Fire, The Order of the Phoenix, The Half Blood Price, The Deathly Hallows Part I and The Deathly Hallows Part II.

The franchise has continued with the Fantastic Beasts movies, though they are nowhere near as critically or commercially successful.

There are no more Potter books to take material from, but Zaslav hopes to work on something new with Rowling.

"We're going to focus on franchises," said Zaslav during a Warner Bros. investor call this week.

"We haven’t had a Superman movie in 13 years. We haven’t done a Harry Potter in 15 years.

"The DC movies and the Harry Potter movies provided a lot of the profits for Warner Bros. … over the past 25 years. I'd like to see if we can do something with J.K. on Harry Potter going forward.”

One idea that Zaslav reportedly has is to adapt the stage show, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, into a two-part movie epic. But, Rowling is yet to give her permission to do this.

The J.K Rowling issue

One of the problems that Warner Bros faces with this plan is that Rowling has been criticised for her comments on trans people, to the point where many Potter fans have been left feeling hurt and ostracised.

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe even publicly went against the author's comments, saying to IndieWire:

“The reason I was felt very, very much as though I needed to say something when I did was because, particularly since finishing ‘Potter,’ I’ve met so many queer and trans kids and young people who had a huge amount of identification with Potter on that.

"And so seeing them hurt on that day I was like, I wanted them to know that not everybody in the franchise felt that way. And that was really important,”
