Zvyagintsev has a bare, observant style in which he merely observes the main characters from a distance. Characters come on the scene or disappear silently again. Deeper psychological motivations are suggested only in the few moments when they are broken by their own suffering. The overwhelming natural beauty seems to be the actual protagonist, while the people of flesh and blood only function as passers-by in major social developments that play alongside their individual lives.

Like the Leviathan from the title Job swallows and spits out again, so the modern search for meaning and meaning is one where the individual collides with impenetrable systems. A toxic combination of corruption and religion undermines the basic principles of a healthy rule of law, namely including human failure in sentencing and offering protection against unfair power relations. In my view, the aloof-looking way of building character is a razor-sharp critique of how citizens in modern Russia are not recognized as fully-fledged human subjects.

A film that I didn't think would interest me at first, so I didn't borrow it from the library for a long time. This week I borrowed it anyway, and I have to say that I think it's a really good, captivating film. The acting is strong and realistic, the story is presented in a realistic way, without any fuss, and I found it quite exciting. Beautiful images of the area. I love this genre! 4*

Leviathan gives a glimpse into the Russian soul and that does not make a person happy, although fortunately there is also something to laugh about. Like in that scene where it is allowed to shoot on the portraits of Russian leaders over the years. Putin is not among them (he still has to mature a bit), but his head is prominently displayed on the wall of the corrupt mayor's office. A man who makes life quite difficult for some citizens in his municipality. Impressive film, I don't think it could be made anymore without a one-way ticket to Siberia.
