I had already heard a lot of good things about La tortue rouge. It is a special animation film about a castaway who is stranded on an uninhabited island. The film has - how could it be otherwise - something to think of Cast Away. But La tortue rouge goes further than that. Michael Dudok de Wit gave the film an extra religious and philosophical approach. The man wishes to leave the island, but is unable to do so due to some omnipotence. He should resign himself to his lot and be content with what life has to offer. For some of us, this may be a New Year's resolution...

The movie also reminded me of the creation story of Adam and Eve the whole time, not that the comparison holds true, but still. The reincarnation of the woman was very special and the life of the man fell into place. In addition, the atmosphere in the film is great. When there is no speaking, you have to stimulate the viewer in other ways. The music is very nice and visually you get to see something. The harmonious swim with the turtles with a heavenly sun in the background is just one of the examples why this animated film is a gem. How you can make a very beautiful production out of so much simplicity is very clever and deserves praise. pretty!

Michael Dudok de Wit sketches a modern Robinson Crusoe: a lonely savage not only comes up against the elements of nature, but above all fights against his own human nature. The island comes to life with atmospheric sketches of water flows, rain showers, the local crab and turtle population and those devastating waves on and around the land. De Wit subtly portrays it with a languid narrative pace in which the emphasis is not on the adventure or the tension, but on the struggle of the nameless main character in a world where death and loss are an everyday part. Tough and yet cute. Unfortunately, the metaphor in the title - the red turtle - doesn't come out as well as I'd like; it feels like a somewhat forced magic-realistic break in style in a film that could do just fine without a fantasy element up to that point. Although I think it's great that you can finally give it your own interpretation.

As a lover of minimalism, the beauty that Dudok de Wit brings to life on the enchanting silver screen appealed to me enormously. It is no coincidence that De Boeddhistische Omroep/Blik was allowed to broadcast this jewel on TV today.

Precisely because of the art of omission, every detail is given a wealth of interpretation possibilities, but I couldn't even recognize Adam and Eve in it, any more than Cast Away. Fortunately, there is (fortunately) nothing of the Bible in it. The meaning of the Red Tortoise is easy to guess, especially in light of three green tortoises shadowing the "new traveler".

In short, after Father and Daughter, this is a magnificent spiritual sequel.
