"Somerset Maugham's exciting adventure-romance of a Beautiful Girl on an island of forgotten men"

In the Zuiderzee, Val Stevens and Lucille Gordon get married when a ship goes down. Val rescues Captain Deever and passenger Eric Blacke. Not long after, Eric saves Val's lives before an octopus catches him. They become friends, but then it turns out that Val is a fugitive and Eric is a detective who must arrest him.
