The Purge: Anarchy plot

Once a year 'The Purge' takes place: a night in which no laws or rules apply. We are introduced to a city where no one has a working security system. A young couple is on their way home on the night in question, when the two suffer from car trouble. The sun begins to set and they decide to leave their car. However, as they approach the city limits, a masked biker gang comes after them.

Bought the box set recently and went to have a look without first looking at the reviews

Immediately find The Purge 1 an entertaining and exciting film that is immediately well in the suspense even after a short slow start

The 2nd part 'Anarchy' is my favorite! Especially because here in this film it takes place more outside than in part 1 inside.. and you notice that it is even more exciting outside than in your own home!

3rd part 'Election Year' a nice sequel to part 2 where as it should be for a security guard Frank Grillo takes his duties quite seriously but plays his role really strongly!

Then the '4th' (yes by the way) part 'The First Purge' was the worst of the series! partly because it could also have been part 1 .. but if this had been the case I think many people would not have watched the rest of the films

Story was slow going.. tension actually stayed for a long time if not the entire movie and the story was a bit confusing after the 1st three parts. Too bad because after the 1st three films I really hoped for the next blast.. unfortunately without Frank Grillo or Elizabeth Mitchell. But with an EXTREMELY irritating (boy boy would you like to sell him a bang) Skelletor!

All in all, the 1st three films are really great and definitely recommended! 4th film should have been the 1st (or not at all) quite a flop!

revision.

I decided to rewatch the movie after I liked the fifth part so much. I wanted to see if I hadn't judged the older parts a bit too harshly, and that was also the case with this film. The Purge Anarchy is not a great movie, especially the first half is actually stronger than I could remember.

I especially liked the opening, where DeMonaco can make the threat of the oncoming purge feel in a remarkably strong way. The filters through the film are also very strong, and the film can make good use of them both at night and during the day. The build-up to the purge and the first half with the scenes on the street form strong, threatening and scary parts, and make this film quite successful in its design.

Acting is good and the characters have just the right dose of depth. What is and remains unfortunate is that in the end the film really found its direction and balance and once that happens, the scary night threat is over. The purge is eventually placed more to the background, making this film more of a politically tinted action film, and that is not exactly beneficial.

As soon as the tension disappears, the element that made the film so intriguing also disappears. If a film can only keep the atmosphere above water for half its time, you won't get very far. In terms of purification itself, there are some nice ideas towards the first half (that truck for example) but the really gross brutalities are mainly implied and not explored in depth. Sometimes still bloody, but that's mainly the shootings in between.

A disappointing finale further throws a spanner in the works and ensures that the film ends up at a 3.0*. I thought the first half was strong, but during the second half the film lost too much of its threat and started to get more and more ridiculous. Curious about the sixth part that is already in the pipeline, but I don't have too high expectations.

But again tried a Purge video. I have both rated The Purge and The First Purge at 2*, so I can say that I'm not a fan of this franchise for the time being. The Purge: Anarchy doesn't change that, although it's a lot less bad than the other two. You can hardly call this horror, however, and exciting or scary moments are far away. This part throws it more over the action bow, a choice that only works out moderately. What Anarchy does do better is follow multiple groups of characters. Characters who are also quite fun and sympathetic, even though everyone is made of cardboard. Frank Grillo is a fine actor in this kind of b-like movies, and he doesn't do anything wrong here. Furthermore, the little bit of insight provided into how The Purge operates across all levels of society is quite intriguing, although I continue to find the whole underlying concept of the series silly. However, that does not mean that you can start pretty cool and cool things with it if worked out well, but so far no film in the franchise has succeeded in that. This comes close to being sufficient, but in the end it is just not good enough. 2.5*.
