After two horror films, director Anthony DiBlasi this time ventures into a thriller film, but one that spends the entire first hour building up. Whether or not the film is an indictment of the Mormon faith is never entirely clear, especially because DiBlasi remains fairly neutral and nuanced in that regard. Missionary is rather about a somewhat psychopathic character with ideas of madness. Dawn Olivieri and Mitch Ryan both deliver fine performances, but the screenplay by Bruce Wood and Scott Poiley waits far too long with the menacing elements. The clichéd structure is not immediately interesting, but it continues endlessly until we arrive at a quite nice finale. However, the finale comes too late, and DiBlasi goes too far with the final madness. The real catch is the lack of visual sense. The cinematography looks bare and unkempt, but the music choice is also out of place for a long time. When the music is eventually taken away by DiBlasi there is room for some tension, but by then Missionary only has 15 minutes left on the clock.
