Mr. Pip plot
"When they needed hope, he gave them great expectations."
Mr Watts is the only white man left on the island after the blockade during the civil war in Papua New Guinea. He opens a school and introduces the children to the story "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens. Matilda, the teenager reciting the story, finds comfort in the story of a Victorian orphan as her own world falls apart. The Redskins, an army sent to kill the local rebels, draws ever closer. Matilda writes the word 'Pip' in the sand. This simple act, however, leads to dire consequences when the Redskins suspect Pip is a Rebel leader and demand that he be brought to them.
