Housebound plot

"Terror Gets Domesticated"

Kylie Bucknell is forced to return to the house she grew up in after a judge puts her under house arrest. Her punishment is made all the more annoying by the fact that she has to live there with her mother, Miriam - a well-intentioned blabbermouth who is convinced that the house is haunted. At first, Kylie waves that thought away. But when she witnesses strange happenings in the night, she begins to wonder if something more is going on.

Watched the first half yesterday, the rest this morning and that is of course not a good sign. The film just didn't want to captivate and that's not because of the actors; they did pretty well. Why didn't this movie interest me? Well, I've said it once before; a horror film whose story is largely set in one location quickly loses my interest or they have to come up with something completely new. The latter is clearly not the case with this film. I've seen it all so many times before. I found the first half really boring, hard to get through. The second half is a bit funny at times, but that's about it. So little enjoyed this New Zealand horror film. So be it.

2.0*

Nice. The film gives an inventive twist to the haunted house genre, it has a smooth style and a quirky and cynical lead actress who carries the film. I didn't know the New Zealand humor but it's starting to please me.

There isn't much that we haven't seen before, but it is deployed in such a way that you wouldn't immediately expect it and that it becomes a welcome addition to the film. There are quite a lot of horror ingredients that are used here, I will of course not spoil them because that is partly the strength of the film, but they deliver some very nice scenes. You are always expertly and subtly put on the wrong track, not so much in terms of story but also in terms of horror (comedy) subgenres, it always goes in a different direction than what you would expect. Fine, spacious 3.5*

The troubled Kylie Bucknell [Morgana O'Reilly] tries in vain to commit a robbery while under the influence of methamphetamine and alcohol. The judge sentences Kylie to 8 months house arrest with her mother [Rima Te Wiata] and her stepfather [Ross Harper]. But oops, the house turns out to have a dark past and because Kylie wears an ankle bracelet she can't just escape the ghosts that haunt the house. Amos [Glen-Paul Waru], a police officer who enjoys paranormal activities in his spare time, comes to her rescue. New Zealand horror film perfectly manages to find the balance between (extremely successful) humor without forgetting to regularly scare you. Often surprising, regularly exciting and always very entertaining.
