Good film about the misery in Ireland. Exciting and shocking. Will happen to you as a soldier in that rotten city.

This thriller provides a raw and realistic picture of Belfast at the height of The Troubles, the protracted conflict between Catholics and Protestants over the status of Northern Ireland. At the center is the Derbyshire-born British inexperienced soldier Gary Hook [Jack O'Connell], who has to keep order in Belfast with his unit. He can still laugh off a confrontation with a group of children, but when apparently the entire neighborhood turns against the soldiers, the confrontation gets out of hand. In the chaos, Gary and Thommo [Jack Lowden] are beaten up by youngsters. Just when a grown woman manages to end the assault, someone Thommo shoots him in the head. The slightly wounded Gary miraculously escapes alive and hides in Belfast where IRA members and Loyalists are indistinguishable.

Yann DeMange is adept at bringing to life the intimidation and psychological effects on the inexperienced soldiers. The confrontation between the army unit and the residents is masterfully filmed and the ensuing manhunt for Gary is dynamically filmed, sharply edited and regularly leaves you gasping for breath. Because friend and foe are indistinguishable for Gary, every contact with a resident is an exciting moment. Corey McKinley impresses as a loyalist's son who brings Gary to safety, and Barry Keoghan is also strong in a role reminiscent of the acclaimed "The Killing Of A Sacred Deer" in intensity. It's a shame the story gets more and more conventional halfway through developing as a conspiracy thriller, drawing more attention to characters who aren't nearly as interesting as Gary.

Bit unrealistic start. the soldiers stand completely unprotected and with weapons in front of a mob that starts throwing stones and they immediately flee.
