Two top names in the horror world, yet I've avoided this film for several years because it simply seemed very dull. It didn't really appeal to me at all, despite the names of Hooper and Englund. Today I decided to buy it and give it a try. Because you never know with Hooper.

But my expectations weren't far off, because Night Terrors (also known here as Nightmare: Nights of Terror and simply called Tobe Hooper's Nightmare in the film) is a rather unsuccessful project with a rather uninteresting premise, a lot of insipid dialogue that seems to go on forever, and visuals as ugly as the night (apart from the occasional dream sequence, perhaps). Furthermore, the acting is of very poor quality, and at times the film is simply unwatchable with all the nonsense. And then there's that wonderful slow-motion scene of a naked man on a horse.

Luckily, there's Robert Englund (always a rock for a fan), who steals the show and makes this nonsense somewhat bearable with a reasonably good double role. The scenes with him as De Sade in the flashbacks are undoubtedly the film's highlight. But aside from these few good moments, this is already the third Hooper film in a row I've seen that's truly rubbish. I can't recognize the man from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1 and 2 in this film at all. Will he ever get anything done again? Let's hope so.

Okay, 2 stars.

Tobe Hooper's weak horror film that actually has only two positive points: the beautiful Zoe Trilling and a few atmospheric dream sequences.

Robert Englund as the Marquis de Sade has a somewhat bland role and never manages to impress with his actions or words. There's some nudity here and there and a few beautiful locations, but this film will be quickly forgotten. 3/10

A ridiculous film and a lousy addition to the career of director Tobe Hooper, who genuinely seemed to have no idea what to do with this nonsense. Night Terrors is essentially about nothing, aside from a naive (and poorly acted) protagonist in Egypt, plagued by violent dreams. For some reason, the Marquis de Sade is a central theme, yet his presence hardly provides any original perspectives or suspenseful moments. Robert Englund may fill the role, but the end result is closer to Freddy Krueger in a crazy wig and a generous dose of white makeup. If Hooper's sometimes clumsy approach were to yield some practical moments and the surroundings were to create some atmospheric atmosphere, this monstrosity would have fallen even further short.
