Not a good movie, but surprisingly enough, hugely enjoyable. Compared to the Conan films with Schwarzenegger, it clearly falls a bit short, but it is definitely a lot better than Red Sonja.
Sorbo acts quite well, just like in the TV series Hercules. Tia Carrere is a feast for the eyes. The special effects are actually quite decent for that time. There are frequent funny quotes. Juba is truly hilarious. The story isn't really a direct adaptation of one of Robert E. Howard's Kull stories, but it contains enough similarities, such as the Topaz Throne, the fact that the tiger was an emblem of his tribe, that he was a galley slave, and that as an Atlantean mercenary he rises to become King of Valusia.
At the end, there is a great reference to a Kull story that was rejected at the time, specifically the quote By this Axe, I rule. This book was adapted and would be released a few years later by Howard as Phoenix Of The Sword, the first Conan story.
The soundtrack is also good, and personally, I even think the rock tune fits well. 2-2.25*

Not a very good adaptation of the eponymous pulp stories by Robert E. Howard, who also wrote the stories about Conan the Barbarian. This film draws more inspiration from that series and is a hodgepodge of various Conan stories, with only a few elements from the Kull series.

Charles Edward Pogue's script is messy. The acting is also uninspiring. Kevin Sorbo gives a watered-down reprise of his role from Hercules. As a result, he is not very surprising, but nonetheless one of the film's better moments. Thomas Ian Griffith plays one of the better roles as the treacherous General Taligaro, but the rest of the cast is quite mediocre. Tia Carrere acts quite exaggeratedly and is consequently more laughable than creepy. Actress Karina Lombard is virtually unintelligible due to her accent, while actor Litefoot is supposed to provide the humor in a supporting role but fails miserably at it.

Fortunately, there is still plenty to enjoy visually. The sets and costumes look beautiful, as does the cinematography by Rodney Charters. The music by Joel Goldsmith (the son of legendary film composer Jerry Goldsmith) is a mix of classical music and heavy metal. Amazingly, this works excellently for a film like this. However, the special effects by SFX guru Kit West (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Young Sherlock Holmes, and Dragonheart) are a major disappointment.

All in all, Kull the Conqueror is an entertaining film that is fun while it lasts, but nowhere near the level of a film like Conan the Barbarian.

By this axe I rule!

An unjustly forgotten Kull classic starring Kevin Sorbo, Tia Carrere, and the incomprehensibly beautiful and unattainable Karina Lombard—or at least that she is very, very high-maintenance girlfriend material. Perhaps as a superficial viewer you might get the impression you are watching an episode of Xena the Warrior Princess, but no. Lucy Lawless is not Tia Carrere, and she plays the bad girl, mind you. And Karina Lombard is no Gabrielle either. I’ll leave it at that for now; figure it out yourself, just watch the movie.
