Both segments score more than adequately, with Argento's video coming out on top. Romero chose to make another film about zombies, but this time with an original approach. However, the interplay between Barbeau and Zada took the leading role and created the most tension. Fascinating to see how the two dealt with the hopeless situation.

The location was well chosen and reminded me a little bit of the equally atmospheric Castle Freak; the constant walking back and forth to the basement. The legendary Savini provided the special effects, which of course cannot be faulted. The sound effects during the murders left much to be desired. The ending is quite terrifying, but ultimately a bit over the edge.

Argento goes more for style. No one believes in black cats bringing bad luck anymore, but countless stories have been told about them. However, that does not stop the Italian from telling it again. Compared to Barbeau and Zada you immediately see that Keitel is a very big one. As is often the case, he plays a madman driven by madness with verve. The pressure keeps increasing, as can be seen by the number of people who called the house and stood at the front door. It made me a bit corny at one point.

The torture of the cats is sometimes nasty, but of course no animals are actually injured. Great soundtrack too. And once again it is Savini who provides an unforgettably nasty ending with his work of art.

Well... the first story is quite nice, especially thanks to the strong, intensely nervous role of Adrienne Barbeau and the good counterplay of Ramy Zada as her lover, and also with nice shots of the living dead, or dead living - at least the two hypnotized undead. The second segment promises a lot, with a lot of blood and unsavory mutilations in the beginning and also a great Harvey Keitel, but the plot doesn't really want to be exciting, atmospheric or lugubrious, and the music at the end always reminds me of Bernard Herrmann's score for Psycho didn't really help either. All in all, this diptych just has the look and "feel" of an old-fashioned horror "teleplay", albeit with a little more "gore", but that is not enough to make something really good out of this, and This seems far too tame for a cinema release, even for 1990.

Reasonable film that tells two stories of Edgar Allen Poe directed by two different directors. The first story is a bit monotonous and doesn't have much to offer. The second story is a bit better, despite being a bit disjointed. Especially visually a lot more interesting with nice camera work and good make-up effects. A narrow 3.0 stars overall.
