A breathtaking descent into a hell where power relations no longer exist, only total dominance and utter slavery. Oh well, you have to do something on a Saturday night when there's nothing on TV.

But what exceptionally powerful scenes this contains, and I actually like it a bit better than Malgré la Nuit, of which the same could be said. I'm not sure exactly why. Perhaps I need to be able to sense a certain degree of logic in the actions, or simply in the characters' very childishly, and I didn't have enough of that with the latter film.

In any case, it's incredible what Grandrieux sometimes manages to achieve with his camera, lighting, and soundtrack. A deeply oppressive opening, evoking associations with the darkest periods of recent European history, or simply with the hopeless current state of society on the eastern fringes of Europe. The unfathomable grief and the dull resignation on those weathered faces... Mothers?

A chilling (to use another all-encompassing adjective) haircut scene, but the two absolute highlights are the dance sequence and the "night vision" scene: a true apocalypse, in which writhing creatures are, as it were, turned inside out, reduced to an instinctive, animalistic core. And Seymour's beautifully shot scream at the film's end makes it clear that there's no way out.

You could call this a masterpiece, but I don't want to see too much of it. Next week, I'll see that movie with Doris Day.

Truly some phenomenal scenes – this is a fever dream, and nothing less.

Yet, for me, the film still stands in contrast to Sombre and Malgré la Nuit. Those films also managed to grab me by the throat as psychological dramas, while Grandieux didn't have that effect. The aloofness and indifference to humanity (well, especially to women) make this an atmospheric journey that you watch not for pleasure, but for the experience, reflection afterward, and constant alienation throughout.

I wonder, by the way, what drives an actress to want to play the lead role in this. Mougaglis has to do or endure a few things in the Gainsbourg category (or close to it).

A unique yet disappointing film in which director Philippe Grandrieux chooses no specific genre. La Vie Nouvelle has therefore become a highly idiosyncratic project with several phenomenal moments, especially when it comes to the sound editing. The unusual stylization creates a few uncomfortable moments, but most of it is spent on a budding romance between two unlikable characters and their uninteresting dramatics. Grandrieux then rambles on endlessly without actually having anything meaningful to say, which makes the film feel endless. In my opinion, a truly stable atmosphere is not evoked, and the best moment is the very literal opening, making the final result a cinematic disappointment.
