Thelma & Louise plot

"Somebody said get a life...so they did."

Thelma is married to Darryl who prefers to see his wife behind the kitchen sink so he can watch TV undisturbed. Louise, ten years her senior, works as a waitress in an eatery; her musician friend is rarely at home. To break the routine, the two friends spend a few days in Louise's old open 1966 Ford Thunderbird convertible. Things accelerate when Louise shoots a man at a bar.

I do like road movies and this Thelma & Louise is certainly one of the best. Thelma departing from the idea that she is hardly respected as a woman, the other, Louise, more in search of adventure. They have already experienced the latter. The incident makes them more and more convinced of their new life mottos carpe diem and yolo. They soon experience that two (attractive) wandering ladies like her cannot traverse the country unscathed and unnoticed.

Louise's past also plays a role here, so that she resolutely wanted to flee after the incident, whether or not in panic. Louise, who is accustomed to listening and following orders, follows meekly. Thelma evolves into a self-respecting woman who can and dares to take initiative herself. It only puts the ladies in a more difficult position.

It's a pleasantly dreamy film, one that makes you hope you can take a seat at the back of the Thunderbird as well. You are sucked in by the enthusiasm of the ladies and the friendly atmosphere of the film, here and there with a heartfelt f*ck you to all misogynistic bastards on this planet. The nice tunes and the very beautiful images of Oklahoma and the Grand Canyon only make it better. The acting performances were also very good, even the male supporting roles were good. The ending was also appropriate for the film: a moment that Valak describes on 3/6/2017 as 'powerful'. I fully agree with this. I saw the movie once, the last 5 seconds have always stayed with me...

Ah.

Scott proves with this film that he has moved to even more side roads during his career as a director. That at his current age he is still working with films with a budget of 100 million is respectable. However, I find this film a lot less respectable, unfortunately.

The film must be very fond of the characters of Sarandon and Davis. It's clear what role they have and what the film is trying to convey with it, but that doesn't really change the fact that I found both of them annoying appearances. Multiple acts they make are done for the comedy, and it never really caught on. I found it rather bland.

Furthermore, I think the film only really picks up steam once the last half hour arrives. There I also found the two ladies cautiously nicer characters. I even thought the ending was perfect, out of the book. It's just a shame that it takes about 100 minutes for the film to get to the funnier parts. The first 100 minutes have reasonable acting and some nice situations, but I couldn't do much with it.

It's a movie that I especially found too long and not that funny, which often made it difficult for me to get through. The film certainly has some nicer points and a strong theme, but that's about it for me. Ridley Scott and I will never really be friends, I'm guessing. In any case, this was another movie that I will soon forget.
