Juliette Binoche, that woman can act wonderfully, in my opinion she carries the film completely on her own. Goosebump moments. The film impressively shows a small part of Camille Claudel's life.

That immediately brings me to the criticism I have of the film: Without prior knowledge, or if you have no idea who Camille Claudel was, a lot remains unclear. I later had to get the how and why she was in the institution, what her brother's motives are and why she doesn't hear anything from the rest of the family from Wikipedia.

Now that I know a little more about the sad life of Camille Claudel, I think the film falls somewhat short, there is so much more to tell.

Cinematographically it was all fine, and as I said, the film, but especially Julliette Binoche, made an impression.

Typical Dumont, and I mean that positively, although the film needs to be seen through a bit, in order not to opt for the already filmed phase of life of young and beautiful with the older Rodin, but three days at an older age in the asylum! The film is very suitable for a small cinema, with few others in the room, while it is raining outside.

In my opinion, this film should be seen as a sequel to Camille Claudel (1988), hence the title. Furthermore, they are very different films. The first shows the story, it is biographical and dramatic. The second focuses on the terrible status quo that emerges in the last 29 years of Camille's life. Bruno Dumont does this in a beautiful setting, a kind of Romanesque monastery that serves as a psychiatric institution, full of well-intentioned staff (fortunately no anti-psychiatry here). The color palette and compositions, especially inside, are very beautiful. The film contains a form of stillness but is not static. The sensory stimuli of light, wind, smell and color can be read on Binoche's face. (By the way, I found her less convincing in the crying scenes.) When there is speaking, it is almost always in monologues. This does not gloss over Camille's paranoia, but what brother Paul expresses in terms of religious fanaticism is very strange and irritating. The moment he appears on the scene, Camille Claudel 1915 also loses some of its power. For example, it is not clear what Paul is doing with that priest, the entire scene hangs in a vacuum. Ultimately, the film raises more questions than it answers. That's fine, but I think Dumont leaves it a bit behind to make something more powerful. Apart from the clever camerawork, Camille Claudel 1915 fails to surprise in terms of content or narrative. But perhaps I missed certain layers of nuance playing out on Binoche's face and in the extended shots.
