In four different stories, director Jia confronts you with the shortcomings of contemporary China. I'm not familiar enough with this issue to appreciate the film. With the exception of the hideous scene with the horse, it all did very little for me. A violent, but not a great film in my opinion.

Zhanke Jia delivers a strong social critique of his native China with four loosely connected stories about people who, for various reasons, are frustrated by the gap between rich and poor and the ways in which those in power try to keep them down. Each storyline ends with a shocking act of desperation, but Jia shows a keen insight into the balance of power in China and thanks to the excellent protagonists, this has become a compelling, at times shocking satirical crime drama.

I did not read the plot of the movie beforehand. At first I thought I could still follow the film. But gradually the main character changed and I no longer understood what the connection was between the people and whether I had seen the person before in the film or whether he was new. The Chinese all look alike. But I did discover a similarity in the film and that is the indictment of the "new" China. The gap between rich and poor and the powerlessness of those at the bottom. And how each of them tries to solve it in their own way. Not really cheerful. There is also a circle in the film. At the end you are back where you started. And so gradually I came to like the film better than I initially thought I liked it. I think I finally understood the movie. And that is also confirmed when I read the plot now. I wonder if I see the film again later, if I still remember it and if I will appreciate it even more. Because the film certainly has something.
