It's fitting that Woody Allen plays opposite John Turturro, who wrote and directed this romantic comedy set in a (largely Hasidic) Jewish neighborhood. "Fading Gigolo" is in many ways reminiscent of the better Woody Allen films. How ironic that Woody Allen has his best role since Antz (2001)! He plays Murray, who reveals himself as a politically correct, charming version of an aging pimp when he connects his friend Fiorante [Turturro] with women looking for a Don Juan. It seems like a golden opportunity at first, until Dovi [Liev Schreiber], a Jewish neighborhood watchman, suspects something is wrong and threatens to inform the Jewish community leaders—with their strict morals and values. Moreover, it proves increasingly difficult for Fiorante to suppress his feelings for the women he "visits."

Beautifully filmed on location with excellent acting across the board. In less delicate hands, this could have been a tasteless farce, but Turturro's direction and his own performance make this a film that effortlessly transitions from romance to pure comedy and back again. Enjoy Allen's one-liners as he teaches a couple of Jewish boys the basics of baseball, as well as Vanessa Paradis, who hasn't lost any of her "Be My Baby" charisma. And a hearing before a Chassidic tribunal has never been so funny! A little gem, a delight from start to finish.

Bad movie. It seemed like a pretty good combination beforehand, Turturro and Allen playing the lead roles together, and with what a subject...

Only this doesn't quite pan out, partly because everything is presented in such a restrained way. There's no momentum to the film; it just meanders towards the end without anything of note happening.

The chemistry between Turturro and Paradis is also completely lacking, though I have to say I found the latter completely unbelievable. Paradis's performance was poor.

I think I'll have completely forgotten this in about three weeks. This was a film to forget very quickly.

Fail.

Initially, I was pleasantly surprised to see that I was watching a Woody Allen film. It started off promisingly enough, with a fun story about two friends, one of whom convinced the other to become a gigolo and earn money doing it. But as the film progresses, it gradually falls flat, and only the very last scene manages to salvage that somewhat, but then it's nowhere near the enjoyable Woody Allen film I expected. And then, as the credits roll, I see that it wasn't a Woody Allen film either. The roles are reversed. The other lead actor was the director. That's possible. But it probably also explains why it lacks the quality of a true Woody Allen film. And Woody Allen himself probably had to keep quiet during the making of the film. While remarkable in itself, I'm inclined to say the experiment wasn't entirely successful.
