The story of one of the most successful failures in exploration history: Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914-1916 attempt to be the first to cross the South Pole. Shackleton's trans-Antarctic expedition was a complete disaster. His ship, The Endurance, became entangled in pack ice, wintered in the Antarctic, and eventually sank. The crew camped on the pack ice. A number of expedition members undertook a heroic, but seemingly hopeless, 1,200-kilometer trek and rowing trip to seek help.
