Smoke plot

"Where there's smoke... there's laughter!"

The owner of the cigar shop has been taking a photo in front of his shop every day at the same hour for 14 years. A novelist doesn't get a single letter on paper since his wife was murdered on the street. A black boy changes his name and identity for everyone he meets. A man tries to forget his past after losing the woman he loved. A woman returns to her former boyfriend after many years and tells him that they have a daughter together and that she is now in trouble. All these people seem to have little in common. But by sheer coincidence, they cross paths and have an indelible impact on each other's lives.

Averse to mood making, but a realistic look in New York neighborhood life.

Simplicity and natural dialogues adorn this print, which does not need music support to convince or occasionally touch the mind, but above all a film that can rely on the exceptional acting talent of a Harvey Keitel and what a clever idea to tell his Christmas story - also though not overflowing with sensation - to be portrayed in white and black.

Meh.

Film that I could mainly just pick up. It is regularly seen as a seriously good film, so a chance never hurts. Smoke was not too bad for me, especially in the beginning, but gradually it turned out to be the case that the film would become a bit heavier for me. Partly because the tone itself just gets heavier.

Films like this one should mainly be carried by the acting and that is also the strongest point of the film. Keitel and Hurt in particular impress in their lead roles, with some genuine emotion. Yet together they also form the weakest point, partly because their background is simply not captivating at all. Certainly not if an extra storyline is then worked in that turns out much more explosive.

In that case I'm talking about Whitaker who only takes up a sparse, but very interesting part of the film. The problem is actually that the difference in tone is a bit unfortunate. Then, for example, you find yourself in a somewhat more intriguing and emotional piece and then again in a very long scene that builds on calm dialogues. It made me especially restless and that doesn't help in a film that lasts almost 2 hours.

Visually I didn't find it very special either, just some easy images of the rawer side of the city. The camera as well as the editing room do little to make this film look a bit more interesting outside of the slightly more unique storytelling style. I can't really do much with it. I can see the potential of it, but not the fun.
