Patrick plot
"Cruel. Controlling. Comatose."
Patrick is in a comatose state in a small private clinic. Its only activity is involuntary spitting. When a beautiful young nurse, who has just been separated from her husband, comes to work at the hospital, she feels Patrick communicating with her. It appears that Patrick is using psychic powers to manipulate events in her life.

I won't immediately claim that we are dealing with high-quality cinematic art here, but among the wagonloads of bad horror films of the past 30 years, this one certainly stands out positively. The story is at least somewhat more original than all the Friday the Nightmare On, Screams, and Jeepers Creepers we are bombarded with. Not entirely original, though, as it is a remake of a horror work from 1978 that would otherwise have been completely forgotten if it hadn't been for the coincidence that a certain Brian May provided the soundtrack.
Okay, we have a crazy doctor performing experiments to bring coma patients back to consciousness, and the new nurse caring for coma patient Patrick, who in turn falls in love with the new nurse, albeit just like that....
Nice build-up where the brakes are increasingly released towards the end; we will overlook the fact that some FX are a bit transparent.

Patrick is an average horror film that stands out primarily for two things: Charles Dance stars in it and the location where the film mainly takes place is amazing. Unfortunately, because of this, the film fails to rise above mediocrity. The film certainly starts strong: there is immediate tension, things are happening. Director Mark Hartley succeeds in creating a unique atmosphere. The mansion where the story takes place is simply overwhelming. The mansion sets the mood of a classic horror house.
Charles Dance carries the film on his shoulders and, in my opinion, is the only one who delivers a good acting performance. With Dance in your cast, you can always be sure of your product, and it is certainly a huge plus to have this man in your film. Fortunately, his colleagues do not do a bad job and at least manage to ensure that they do not stand out due to wooden acting.
Patrick has plenty of jump scares and, fortunately, thanks to the atmosphere, doesn't have to rely on them too much. It is a pity that the rather amateurish special effects manage to spoil the fun. They all look a bit clumsy. It is a known phenomenon in budget horror productions. I personally find it annoying. Still, if there is a film starring Charles Dance, I want to see it, regardless of what people think of it.

Mediocre to poor.
The atmosphere in the care home is actually the only positive thing about this film. That is portrayed quite well.
In terms of successful jump scares, I managed to find exactly one, the acting frequently falls below par, the special effects are abysmal, and the story itself ultimately amounts to very little.
