Lizzie Borden Took an Ax plot

"It's time to bury the hatchest"

On a hot summer day in 1892, Lizzie Borden returns to her home in Fall River, Massachusetts. She shares the home with her father Andrew, stepmother Abby and sister Emma. There she is confronted with the bloody scene of her parents being murdered. The police soon interrogate several suspects, but the evidence keeps pointing to Lizzie, the apparently normal teacher. However, Lizzie's attorney, Andrew Jennings, pleads her innocence, saying it is impossible for a woman to have committed these horrific murders.

A decent film about a woman accused of the brutal murder of her father and stepmother. A captivating true story set in the late nineteenth century. The film's suggestive ending is, of course, never proven, but it does enhance the film as a whole. Christina Ricci plays her role rather heavily, but gets away with it. The modern music isn't really fitting.

I'm unfamiliar with the true story of Lizzie Borden, so I went into the film with an open mind. A wonderfully quirky atmosphere is quickly created, thanks largely to the protagonist's unusual personality. Ricci's superb performance (her presence is already positively quirky) does have a side effect: her behavior makes her utterly guilty, and it's frustrating that she's not "simply" condemned right away.

There's—understandably—little tension in the story's structure; it relies on the acting and execution. The fact that some scenes are repeated countless times wasn't a plus, as was the completely inappropriate music.

Ricci makes the film worth watching, but it doesn't get any further than a snack.

Unfortunately, this film didn't grab me. The main reason is personal; I don't like period dramas set in a time I don't know how long ago. The story was decent, but nothing special or surprising. The modern music certainly didn't suit the film. Lizzie, on the other hand, was played quite well. I think McHattie had already died before filming even began... No, it's a mediocre film.
