Very nice binoculars. Is often mentioned in the same breath/compared to Spring Breakers, so that's why I gave this one a chance, although I'm not a fan of Coppola. And certainly didn't regret it.

The emptiness and superficiality that many fall for, fits the film perfectly. The characters themselves are nothing more than empty shells with quite empty lives. And to fill that void, they raid their "beloved" stars in order to get a lot of money to live an even emptier existence with a lot of money. That emptiness and filling is well captured by Coppola.

The film is perhaps a bit repetitive and the umpteenth robbery and party is perhaps a bit monotonous but again very fitting. After all, they have nothing else like they let happen to them. The young people let themselves go more and more and change from non-conspicuous teenagers into self-righteous annoying people. Also witness the way they capture everything on social media and think they can get away with anything.

A good cast is very important for this to happen. And the casting in The Bling Ring is fantastic. Watson plays her part beautifully. Great in the last scenes too. Was also quite impressed with Broussard and Chang. But Farmiga and Julien also have their good moments.

Nicely shot also by Blauvelt and Savides who capture Cali very well with glossy photography. But the scenes around the houses and the shots when they are driving also look fantastic. Especially in combination with the wonderful soundtrack that fits the film perfectly.

Very much enjoyed The Bling Ring. A film that can certainly grow in prestige with me.

Coppola on a party hunt.

As a director, I've never been able to figure out her style like that. If I think I can put my finger in the right place, later I see a completely different kind of film from her. She does seem to like to look at things through a female perspective, and this time she does so with a true story.

Lots of fairly well-known actresses here, without really impressing. Especially Watson was very disappointing to me, although I think I have seen too little with her. The hype surrounding Farmiga has never been understood. In American Horror Story I didn't find her that special either, not this time either. Broussard is otherwise invisible and Mann is pushed very far into a stereotypical role.

Fortunately, if you can look around a bit, you can expect a nice film, with some striking style choices. The scenes at the party, for example, are decent although never overwhelming, and the choice to film the robberies from a "stranger" perspective is nicely done. Moreover, also enough detail and colors to brighten things up, no complaints in that area.

Nice thing otherwise, but why it has to get a rather dry and distant film adaptation is a mystery to me. Film constantly drifts between different genres without really wanting to pick one. That dreamy tone that Coppola continues to maintain works, but in the end you do get the feeling that you have been looking at hot air. Perhaps more instructive to just read about the actual case if you are an enthusiast.

Sofia Copolla was inspired by a 2010 article by Nancy Jo Sales from Vanity Fair. In "The Suspects Wore Louboutins" she described how a group of teenagers managed to break into the homes of media stars like Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton and Orlando Bloom so that they could imagine themselves a wealthy superstar. In addition, they also stole about 3 million in 'bling bling'. Coppola's screenplay follows five teenagers she portrays as hedonistic, self-righteous spoiled brats whose behavior is partly the result of poor parenting and the influence of the media. The result is a succession of burglaries, flashy montages with pop tunes that are just as empty-headed as the film. Completely uninteresting.
