A nice parody of the films based on Karl May's books. The films starring Winnetou and Old Shatterhand, who in this parody are named Abahachi and Ranger, respectively. The story is rather thin and serves as a framework for the humor. You could actually consider the film a collection of sketches connected by a weak narrative. Some sketches are funny. Some are a little funny. And some are just plain awful.

The film primarily ridicules the Western genre by playing with clichés and the viewer's expectations. It's Abahachi and Ranger, along with the villain Santa Maria, who generate the laughs. The characters in Der Shuh des Manitu exhibit behavior that doesn't fit similar characters you'd find in a decent Western. Here, that behavior is exaggerated to the point of absurdity or simply stupidity. And it works. The interaction between Abahachi and Ranger is enjoyable, and the exaggeration of their characters compared to the serious characters Winnetou and Old Shatterhand is amusing. The villain Santa Maria is also a pleasant character. An exaggerated portrayal of a villain. His appearance is that of a cunning and mean villain. He surprises in a funny way with frivolous behavior and by showing emotional empathy for his gang members.

The film is never serious. It pokes fun at everything. "Der Shuh des Manitu" is meant to be pure entertainment, and as far as I'm concerned, it succeeds. The most hilarious scenes are two dance numbers that suddenly appear out of nowhere. Delightfully absurd, utterly absurd, and just plain funny. Yes, I did laugh out loud at times.
