Yesterday it was so far. My first Star Wars movie.

After some doubts I "just" started with episode 4. I toyed with the idea of watching the films chronologically and starting with episode 1, but thought I wanted to see the films in the order they came out.

So this one came out in 1977. More than 40 years ago. And that is noticeable. The whole feels very dated, of course, but that can't be blamed on the film.

Unfortunately, there are still a lot of things that can be blamed on the film. Because actually the first Star Wars scores very moderately in many areas. The pacing is very inconsistent, the acting certainly doesn't last, the fights are of an unprecedented tameness and the comic relief is often misplaced. And there are still more things that are really not in order. I understood that the film on the editing table has changed very drastically. But I still don't find the storytelling convincing.

Looking purely at the quality of the film, I should not give this starting piece a satisfactory. But the world that was created and the epic "good versus bad" saga Lucas managed to create deserve better. Even though the execution in this first part leaves a lot to be desired.

What I like most about the entire Star Wars saga is the comical interaction between C-3PO and R2-D2. R2 is just cute with it's round top and that twisting all the time, but not only does it look cute, it also sounds so sweet with those cute beeps all the time...if you listen closely, it's like bird sounds, imitated by a computer. C-3PO is another story altogether. It is especially funny because of his large viewers that give him a permanently surprised look and his clumsy motor skills. He reminds me most of the goofy Frank Spencer from the British comedy series Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em. Elderly Moviemeter users will probably remember him. Beautiful iconic image of a lost C-3PO in the desert.
